Honey Harvest part 2...
It's the end of the season and we've taken the last of the honey from the bees. Unfortunately the white hive probably won't make it through the winter. For whatever reason the colony was very irritable throughout the year and not producing well. We moved frames of brood and food from the blue hive, installed a new queen and shuffled things around as best as we could figure...but none of what we did seemed to turn them around.
We focused on the blue hive and took the last bit of capped honey and reorganized the frames/boxes so they'd be ready to settle in for the fall/winter. We bought a winter blanket/cover (basically bubblewrap with mylar reflective sheets), and an entrance guard (a metal sheet punched out with slots big enough for bees but too small for mice).
The blue hive wasn't too upset about us taking their honey this time...M was a champ!
