Hi.

Welcome to my blog (obviously a work in progress!) where I'm capturing our adventures at Wildwood. Hope you have a nice stay!

Our #2 priority...

Our #2 priority...

We FINALLY got around to getting the #1/#2 situation sorted out!

Last year we made do with a Lug-A-Loo.  For those who are fortunate enough to not know what that is...it's essentially a 5 gallon bucket, a sort-of toilet seat lid and a big heavy dooty (haha) double ziploc bag that goes in it.  1...they're tippy.  2...the toilet seat is not anatomically accommodating for men.  3...what's in the bucket is very visible.  4...while "clean" to deal with, the bags fill up quickly and you really want to get it sealed up right on the first try!  We used a bit of kitty litter to absorb liquid as well and it did mask odours.  More often than not there were trips to town in the morning....

So while last year was basically camping and just checking things out, this year was getting setup a bit better.  After some test holes we discounted doing an old fashioned outhouse with a pit/french drain (which you're not supposed to do anyways) since the soil depth is pretty shallow before we hit shale.  After much research we bought a Natures Head, which is a composting toilet.  This toilet separates pee into a separate container that can be removed and disposed of independently of the container for solid waste.  Doing so is supposed to help with minimizing odours since too much moisture in the solids container is no good.  It also has a flip down trap door so the hole to the solids container remains closed until it's needed.  So far it's working out well.  It's a solid, stable, !!well contained!! toilet.  It has a little 12v computer fan to help dry out the solids, but we haven't hooked that up yet.

We built a little 4x4' outhouse (minus hole in the floor) that will house the toilet and a washup sink.  We were definitely winging-it with the design and built some of it in the driveway and some of it on site.  If I had to do it again (and probably will eventually) I'll just build it onsite since it was heavy and a pain to transport the sections pre-built.  It's coming along ok and nearly done.  We still need to do a bit more siding up top, screen the whole thing in, get the door mounted and then get the sink/water hooked up.

Getting there....
